چکیده

We investigate the problem of deciding whether a given preference profile is close to having a certain nice structure, as for instance single-peaked, single-caved, singlecrossing, value-restricted, best-restricted, worst-restricted, medium-restricted, or groupseparable profiles. We measure this distance by the number of voters or alternatives that have to be deleted to make the profile a nicely structured one. Our results classify the problem variants with respect to their computational complexity, and draw a clear line between computationally tractable (polynomial-time solvable) and computationally intractable (NP-hard) questions.

Programming social choice in logic: some basic experimental results when profiles are restricted

Social choice theory argues mathematical models and their logical consequences for group decision making based on individuals’ preference orderings axiomatically. The most basic results have been proved in this field are two impossibility results for group decision making. Arrow’s general (im)possibility theorem for preference aggregation procedures, i.e., there is no nondictatorial social welf...

A Note on Dhillon ( 1998 ) ∗

We provide a counterexample to Theorem 1 (A) in Dhillon [3]. 1 Dhillon’s Multi-Profile Version of Harsanyi’s Theorem on Utilitarianism In an important paper, Amrita Dhillon [3] provided a multi-profile version of Harsanyi’s [5] single-profile theorem on utilitarianism. Like Harsanyi did, she assumed that the social alternatives are lotteries. Individuals’ preferences satisfy the von Neumann-Mor...

Recognizing and Eliciting Weakly Single Crossing Profiles on Trees

The domain of single crossing preference profiles is a widely studied domain in social choice theory. It has been generalized to the domain of single crossing preference profiles with respect to trees which inherits many desirable properties from the single crossing domain, for example, transitivity of majority relation, existence of polynomial time algorithms for finding winners of Kemeny voti...

Psychophysical optimization of lighting spectra for naturalness, preference, and chromatic diversity.

The optimal spectral profiles of lighting for naturalness, individual preference, and chromatic diversity were estimated with psychophysical experiments in which observers selected illuminants from a set of metamers of D65 to render outdoor and indoor scenes. For naturalness, the illuminant selected was more spectrally structured than daylight and had a low color rendering index. For preference...
